Magnesium alleviated Josefin's migraine attacks

Josefine is one of the 1.5 million people in Sweden who suffer from migraines, which makes it one of the most common folk diseases in our long country. For Josefine, it has not only been about a severe headache, but it has also brought with it many side effects such as mental ill health and a large portion of shame. Josefine tested many medicines with several side effects before she was recommended to take magnesium as a preventive measure, which has changed her life as the migraine attacks do not come at all to the same degree now compared to before she started taking supplements.
For Josefine, she had experienced migraines up close before she herself got the problems, this through her mother who was often bedridden in a dark room crammed full of pain-relieving medicines. For Josefine, her migraine attacks started in high school and she clearly remembers her first real attack.
- It was like experiencing some kind of visual phenomenon that was followed by flashes, flickers and double vision. Then came a headache that hurt so much that I didn't know where I should go, the only pain I could compare it to was suffering from a terribly powerful toothache which I had on one occasion earlier in my life.
Many others with migraines describe the process as starting with symptoms such as fatigue, reduced ability to concentrate and poorer thinking. Then a severe headache begins, which many people with migraine describe as unmanageable.
- My headaches were rare at first, but later I had about one attack a month which affected my mood extremely, I became very easily irritated and angry, but also felt ashamed when I was ashamed to say that I had a headache. It was as if no one believed in me and several friends and teachers thought that I knew too much and that it was only a matter of taking a headache tablet if I had pain.
In the event of an attack of the most powerful kind, Josefine had to visit hospital where she was told that she was suffering from a migraine, exactly the same illness that her mother suffered from. The hospital gave her powerful medicine to ease the pain.
- My whole body said NO, NO, NO to taking such powerful medicines for the pain. I had seen with my own eyes how my mother became flustered and was not herself at these intakes. But at the same time I had no choice, my pain was terrible, I would have done anything to get rid of it.
Later in life came the next challenge for Josefine. When she had finished her university studies and was going to look for work, how would she deal with the fact that she will probably have a lot of absence due to her migraine attacks in a job interview? Here she chose never to bring it up because then she realized that it would be impossible to get a job at all.
Josefin got the first job she was looking for and remembers her luck with her own nice office and many colleagues. But also the mental pressure to live up to the expectations and demands on oneself and from others.
- Over time, the migraines began to affect my work, the attacks continued to come quite regularly and I didn't know how to cope. It felt as if my colleagues thought I was lying. But my boss unexpectedly came to my rescue as he had experience of migraines from his own family and understood what I was going through. It was a great liberation for me.
Josefin goes on to say that this was also where the big turning point came when her boss asked her if she tested her body values, which she had not done. Her boss had experience that too low levels of magnesium in the body could affect migraine attacks.
- It turned out to be true, even though it was difficult to measure the magnesium levels, it could still be seen that I had very low levels. I started taking magnesium supplements daily and after a couple of months my attacks started to decrease. After one year, they had decreased considerably.
Magnesium is a mineral and in the body, magnesium is involved in many processes and functions as an important component of over 350 enzymes. Research and studies have been able to connect low magnesium levels in saliva, serum and cerebrospinal fluid in connection with migraine.
For Josefine, a magnesium was a turning point in terms of the number of attacks, which also made her more relaxed as a person.
- Previously I went and waited for the next attack which was extremely stressful, today I don't feel so much anymore which has given me a different mindset as I manage my working days better than before, I am more harmonious which makes it feel natural to enjoy both dinners and daily exercise. Before, everything was just irritation, chaos and living for the moment.
An interesting connection Josefin makes is that she would not have been where she is today without her migraine.
- When I had problems at high school with poor grades as a result and that no one believed in me, I think I tightened my fists a little extra and wanted to show them that I could go extra far in my future professional career. It has been tough and I have had to fight a lot to reach my goals, but it has also given me a humility in life that I have benefited from both in my work and life in general.
