Meet Diego and Maarit!
Diego, our product designer, is responsible for overseeing our formulations, while Maarit is our quality control superstar. Together, they ensure we can deliver nature's wisdom through pure, safe, and effective vitamins that support your daily well-being.
Diego, Aarja Health's product formulations are so unique, what inspires you to create them?
When we create a product, we think about what problem we can solve for our customers and what is most optimal. We would prefer that our customer only takes one capsule or sachet of powder per day and not five. We love simplicity and try to make our products clean and easy to take, as well as taste great!
What made you become a product designer? Have you always been interested in the therapeutic properties of food?
A large part of my family are doctors, pharmacists and nurses, and I have had a special interest since I was a child in natural medicine. I am a naturopath and have been helping people recover from "incurable" illnesses for years. Quality foods and supplements are an integral part of any treatment because they help compensate for nutritional deficiencies, while strengthening the immune response.
How does the formulation process work as a whole? Or, how do you start with many different ingredients and end up with a complete formula that solves a specific problem?
In the world of dietary supplements, there are at least two important things to keep in mind: 1) the quality of the raw materials and 2) the synergy between the components. When creating a product from scratch, the formulation is the first thing you need to consider. What should be the main ingredient, and what should be secondary. Then it is necessary to investigate whether there is reliable information that shows that a raw material enhances the effect when combined with another raw material.
When purchasing raw materials, you typically have two options. To buy from mass-produced suppliers in China, or to buy from companies dedicated to developing exclusive raw materials. The quality, efficacy, and safety of these two options can make a world of difference!
We care a lot about the quality of our products, and therefore choose raw materials from registered and documented brands. This way we get scientific studies that guarantee quality and efficacy, so we know that the end user will get a product that helps them achieve their health goals.
Once we have developed the raw materials and formulation, we think about the number of tablets or capsules you need to take to meet your daily needs, and from there a new dietary supplement is born!
Maarit, there are also food components integrated into the supplements such as cranberries and blueberries, but where do they come from? How can these ingredients go from being ordinary food to an ingredient that can be used in Aarja products?
We use berry juice powder that is produced in Finland from berries picked from Finland's organic certified forests. The berries are pressed, and the juice is spray-dried with a carrier so that all health benefits are intact. The taste of this raw material is very strong and good. These Nordic ingredients have been part of our "folk medicine" for hundreds of years with unique health benefits.
When quality is such a high priority, how do you ensure that the quality of the ingredients matches your standards?
All our raw materials are well-documented and study-based - preferably branded ingredients. All suppliers are well-known and have a long history with a good reputation. The raw materials have approved specifications and information about allergens, GMOs and origin. Each individual batch must have a certificate of analysis according to the specification. When the raw material batch is delivered to the factory, we give them an internal batch number and take samples. The samples are analyzed with an FTIR spectrometer to compare it with our reference sample. Each raw material batch must be approved before it can be used in production.
In terms of production, what does the process look like from start to finish when you make a dietary supplement out of the raw materials?
We start production by checking and weighing the raw materials, sifting and mixing them. Then tablets, capsules or powder are made in portion bags. The quality is carefully assessed every 30 minutes throughout the process. Tablets and capsules are packed in various types of boxes or trays (blitzers). During production and packaging, all steps are carefully documented. After production is complete, the documentation and samples are checked again by our production manager and quality manager. Everything must be correct and documented before the product is sent to the customers!
What distinguishes your production process from others?
Our factory is built primarily to medical standards and is highly certified in food safety. The quality standards include the entire process from quality management system, product development, operational processes and facilities. All processes are evaluated annually by external authorities.
