Can dietary supplements improve brain health?

You know those days when you lose the word in the middle of a sentence, can't remember simple details, and feel like your brain is not working as usual? Most of us have probably experienced this. Can supplements help against this "brain fog" and improve brain capacity both in the short and long term? If yes, which supplements are best for brain health, mood, and/or memory?
Although the term brain fog is not a medical or scientific diagnosis, it is something many can relate to – the feeling of being slow or "cloudy" in the head. Whether it is due to diet, little sleep, or a stressful environment, we agree that brain fog is not very pleasant. So what can you do to get rid of brain fog? Adjusting your diet is a good start, and it can also be useful to use supplements against brain fog. But before we get into the solutions, we first need to ask: What actually causes brain fog?
Causes of brain fog
Possible causes of brain fog include diet, environment, lack of sleep, stress, and hormonal imbalances. As mentioned earlier, brain fog is not an official medical diagnosis, which means there is no single fixed cause. Still, there are several theories.
The first – and probably most common – is about diet. The brain is one of the body's most sensitive organs and is easily affected by even small changes. When you eat food that the body cannot tolerate or reacts poorly to, the body uses extra resources on digestion. This can also create inflammation that strains the whole body.
Another theory is that the environment around us can contribute to brain fog. Even if you live cleanly, use eco-friendly cleaning products, and do not work in an obviously toxic environment, it is difficult to avoid pollution in the air, water, and other resources. The truth is that there is only so much you can control, and people react differently to environmental influences.
Finally, brain fog can also be linked to stress, sleep problems, or hormonal imbalances. Although these seem like separate issues, they are often closely connected. In a world where many live with chronic stress and work harder than ever, lack of sleep is very common. Little sleep can increase stress levels – and vice versa. This can in turn lead to hormonal imbalances that make it even harder to sleep and manage stress. The result is a negative spiral that can make anyone feel exhausted.
Can supplements improve brain health?
The answer to this question is not straightforward, for several reasons. Brain health is influenced by many factors, and the effect of a specific supplement will therefore vary from person to person.

When it comes to brain health, one of the best things you can do is provide your body with the nutrients it needs to function optimally – either through food or supplements. Can this actually improve brain health? It is difficult to give a definitive answer, as it depends on many factors and how effectively your body absorbs and uses the nutrients. But by supplementing with good vitamins and nutrients for the brain, you at least give your body better conditions for good mood, good memory, and optimal cognitive function.
Should I take supplements for brain health?
It seems that much of the research is still not entirely clear regarding whether supplements can actually improve brain health. What is undisputed, however, is that the brain needs certain vitamins and minerals to function optimally. Nutrients such as healthy fatty acids (EPA and DHA), found in omega-3 and krill oil, antioxidants like vitamin C (as well as A and E), B vitamins, and magnesium are all important for the brain's daily function. By supplementing your diet with these nutrients, you ensure that the foundation for good brain health is in place and give your body the best conditions for optimal function.
If you feel that your diet is not quite optimal, supplements can have a big impact on brain health. Although there is currently no supplement proven to "supercharge" the brain beyond what is considered normal, the combination of high-quality supplements, a balanced diet, and regular physical activity can be the difference between feeling heavy and foggy – or having energy and vitality through all eight seasons of the year.
