Blåbär - The Real Nordic Superfood (incl. Smoothie Recipe)
Share
Nordic blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) are full of nutrients and vitamins. Blueberries and other Nordic berries grow and survive in the harsh and cold weather, and that is why they contain so many nutrients. Nordic berries such as blueberries, lingonberries and sea buckthorn have been used for centuries as folk medicine in the Nordic countries and are said to have many health benefits.
The best thing is that blueberries are healthy but taste so good and fresh! Blueberries, like other Nordic berries, have lots of health benefits - so blueberries are definitely nature's own superfood and a delicacy. The small berries can be used on top of porridge or yoghurt, in pies and pastries and in smoothies. Do you know anyone who doesn't like blueberries in any form?
Blueberries contribute to health
It has been studied that blueberries can reduce inflammation, which contributes to health risks and diseases. Blueberries are also believed to help with better memory and vision. They are also said to help lower blood pressure and they contribute to your digestion thanks to their high fiber content.
Blueberries contain lots of vitamins such as vitamins C, E and B
They are full of antioxidants. The number of antioxidants in blueberries is much higher than in regular blueberries, fruits and vegetables. They contain healthy polyphenols that benefit your health in several different ways. Anthocyanins are the most potent polyphenols in blueberries. Blueberries are also a good source of fibre!
But what is the difference between blueberries and garden blueberries? Blueberries that grow wild mainly in the arctic regions are smaller and have a darker blue or purple color inside than the cultivated blueberry, this is due to its high anthocyanin content. Blueberries are usually less juicy and are said to contain more nutrients and antioxidants than cultivated blueberries - also because they need to survive the long winter.
How many blueberries should you eat to get the health benefits?
You can eat them as much as you want, although at least a couple of deciliters is recommended daily. 1 dl is a good start, it contains e.g. 2 grams of fibre, which is about 8% of the recommended daily intake. You should get at least 25 grams of fiber daily.
