Blueberries | Nordic superfood smoothie recipe

Nordic blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) are packed with nutrients, and now is the time of year when these superberries begin to ripen.

We love these little blue superheroes because they are rich in nutrients and vitamins. Blueberries and other Nordic berries grow and survive in the harsh and cold weather, which is why they contain so many nutrients. Nordic berries such as blueberries, cranberries and sea buckthorn have been used for centuries as folk medicine in the Nordic countries, and they are said to have many health benefits.

The best thing about blueberries is that they are healthy, but also that they taste so good and fresh! Blueberries, like other Nordic berries, have many health benefits – they are definitely nature’s own superfood and a treat. The little berries can be used on top of porridge or yoghurt, in pies and pastries, and in smoothies. Do you know anyone who doesn’t like blueberries in any form?

Blueberries contribute to good health

Research has shown that blueberries can reduce inflammation. Inflammation contributes to health risks and diseases. Blueberries are also beneficial for better memory and eye health. They are also said to help reduce blood pressure, and they aid in our digestion due to their high fiber content. Here's why we love these little blue berries:

  • Blueberries contain many vitamins such as vitamins C, E and B.
  • They are packed with antioxidants. The number of antioxidants in Nordic blueberries is much higher than in other blueberries, fruits and vegetables.
  • Blueberries contain healthy polyphenols, which benefit your health in several ways.
  • Anthocyanins are the most potent polyphenols in blueberries.
  • Blueberries are also a great source of fiber!

But what is the difference between Nordic blueberries and garden blueberries? Blueberries that grow wild mainly in the Arctic regions are smaller and have a darker blue or purple color than cultivated blueberries. This is due to the berries' high anthocyanin content. Wild blueberries are usually less juicy and are said to contain more nutrients and antioxidants than cultivated ones – partly because they need to survive the long winter.

How much blueberries should you eat to get health benefits?

You can eat as much as you want, and at least a couple of deciliters is recommended daily. 1 dl is a good start as it contains, for example, 2 grams of fiber, which is about 8% of the recommended daily intake. You should get at least 25g of fiber daily.
